Katalog Yvert 24

JAPAN FRENCH POST OFFICE: France 80c tied by "YOKOHAMA BAU FRANCAIS 16 DEC 66" c.d.s on cover to Lyon with exceptional blue "PD" alongside. Very rare provisional use of the circle date stamp instead of the "5118", AFTER THE GREAT FIRE OF YOKOHAMA (26.11.1866), were the French Post Office burned down and the number cancel lost. The cancellation by date stamp is much rarer than by the "ANCHOR" obliteration, it was only used for the first two Packet boat departures. This cover was carried by the first ship after the great fire (M.I Alphée), ONLY 3 COVERS RECORDED (one is a front) according to Matsumoto, who prices the more common "anchor" cancellations at 5000 USD. A very fine rarity. Signed Calves.
